Weekend Review 42

This past weekend was quite a boozy-doozy weekend. I had a giveaway a week or so ago for tickets to a beer event at the Minneapolis Boat Show so I was offered a pair of tickets and my little sister won a pair as well, cause I have so many readers!

We met up for a quick happy hour and some light food before heading in to taste some local brews and find our dream boats.

After the boat show we headed to Salsa A La Salsa's new location in UpTown for some chips and guac and tacos. I'm so excited to have this restaurant just a hop, skip and jump from my apartment. While the other girls didn't love their experience I feel like we were at different restaurants. I loved my house margarita and I thought the steak tacos 'popular style' were tasty and filling. Our server could have paid a little more attention to our table though. We saw the bus man more than we saw our server. Only complaint there.

Saturday was a great day. The sun was shining, it was warm and I had my last spin class at The Shed via ClassPass. I can not rave about that place enough! There were only half a dozen of us in the class but the instructor gave us a great motivational speech with background music to boot while we warmed up, he 'woo'd!' a lot, came around and introduced himself to everyone and at the end of class shook everyone's hand and thanked US for a great class! The Shed is definitely one of my favorite local gyms if you want to get your butt kicked and get all nice and sweaty. Check out this story on The Shed.

After my workout I got dressed and ready to start a day of brewery hopping around Minneapolis with a group of friends! I walked down to LynLake Brewery since it was so gorgeous out and snagged us a table by the open windows. I had their Neighbor Enabler which was very tasty.

Next we moved to Herkimer where their happy hour isn't just discounted beer. It's 2-4-1! So we shared some beers and food to get a base before heading to NorthEast.

Our third stop was Bauhaus. It was my first time at their brewery and my first time trying their beer. I had the Wonderstuff, again, a delicious beer.We ordered pizza and played some games. This place has an awesome patio covered in string lights that I can't wait to enjoy this summer.

Our next stop was Sociable Cider Werks. I had the Freewheeler which is a lighter, crispier cider. We were lucky to get a large enough table for our whole group.

Our final stop was the 1029 Bar where some of the cabin neighbors met us. It's such a great little dive bar to end the night.

Sunday was the struggle of all struggles. I laid in bed, in horrible pain all morning but luckily I was able to put myself together for volleyball practice. When I got home I managed to somehow burn the top of my frozen pizza while the bottom remained doughy and not at all cooked. Yes, I had the pizza on the middle/low rack. The fella came over and we watched about a dozen movie trailers since it's FREE STARZ week! Then we finally settled on Reasonable Doubt. I highly enjoyed it with plenty of twists throughout the movie.

And that brings us to the present. It's Tuesday and the smell of pizza is wafting through my office. Meanwhile I have a loaded salad calling my name.

What I'm Eating

In case you haven't heard, I'm leaving for Cabo in just over two weeks. 16 days to be exact. I'm one of those people who plans to work out and get in crazy good shape because I have months before my trip. Next thing I know I'm less than a month out and I have only thought about working out and eating healthy, so I give up because, ya know, you can't make big changes in one month. Give me all the cheeseburgers and fries and wine and pasta!

This time around I actually said, I have three weeks until vacation, I can make some changes and drop at least a couple LB's. Just from watching what I'm eating in one week, I'm down a solid two pounds and most days I feel pretty satisfied. In this time I only made it to the gym once and it was a class I wasn't super satisfied with.

Since I had Monday off from work, my mom and I went to Costco and Whole Foods so I could stock up on some healthy items.

Romaine Lettuce
Feta Cheese
Green Beans
Frozen Organic Mixed Berries

Whole Foods:
Red Onion
Organic Chicken
Brown Cow Greek Vanilla Cream Top
Granny Smith Apples
Uncured 360 Bacon

I'm not someone who regularly eats breakfast because one of two things will happen. I'll eat breakfast and not be hungry the rest of the day. Or I'll eat breakfast and never feel satisfied so I'll eat everything in sight all day long. But, in trying to eat balanced meals all day, I started with breakfast which was 1/2 cup Brown Cow Vanilla Cream Top, 2 tsp chia seeds and either a cup of mixed berries (thawed overnight in the yogurt) or a granny smith apple.

Tastes like the yummy fruit dip that is loaded with Sugar.

By the time lunch rolls around I want something warm and I want to get out of the office. Well, that typically means I'm going to spend around $10 on a burger or burrito I will immediately regret eating, and that $10 I want to put towards a giant margarita or a massage on the beach. Instead of listening to my cravings I've been packing loaded Ali-fied Cobb salads. These salads are so filling and take me about 30 minutes to eat, seriously, big salad.

Half romaine and half spinach. Spinach is much more filling so I feel satisfied much longer in to my work day. Sauteed chicken with salt and pepper to taste, red onions, one strip of bacon, feta cheese and a hard boiled egg with some ranch dressing. I need my ranch dressing. In moderation of course.

Dinner has consisted of one chicken breast, about 4 oz, topped with homemade pesto and 2 cups of steamed/boiled veggies. I love my broccoli with nothing on it so I don't add seasoning or butter. When I make green beans I add a tablespoon of butter and chipotle pepper seasoning for a kick.

That homemade basil pesto was to die for. I still have a little bit left, but I'll be making more soon and I'll be sure to share the recipe.

If I'm really hungry between lunch and dinner I'll have a small hand full of nuts. Especially if I'm planning on working out before eating dinner. I've had this same meal every day this week with a few swaps for breakfast, apple or berries. And for dinner, broccoli or green beans. It's enough of a change to not bore me and veer away from eating healthy.

Even eating at the man friends last night I stayed consistent with grilled chicken, grilled zucchini, squash, green peppers and green beans with a small side of garlic mashed potatoes and wine of course.

Weekend Review 41

Do you ever have that feeling that everything is right in the world, well, your world at least? The last couple of weeks, something clicked and life has been splendid. I can't say that there was one big event that happened to make me feel this way, but it's all small things that are just continuously going well.

I've really been enjoying Classpass these last couple of weeks. I've mostly done barre classes, but I've noticed a difference in my body, my mind and my mood. I'm giving Classpass and my motivation to go to these classes while my membership is free a huge shout out as to why I feel like life is falling in to place. I'm making myself and my health a priority.

40* means you don't need to wear long pants in MN!

Friday night I spent with the man friend. We had a very relaxed night since I had an early morning wake up call. We watched Sex Tape which I was expecting to be really funny, because that's what I had heard. It was not. I'm not a big Cameron Diaz fan, but I'm a huge Jason Segel fan. Save your $1 at Red Box and wait until it comes out on Netflix.

Saturday morning I was out the door by 7:30 to make it to a coaches clinic that lasted way too long and was kind of pointless. At least we had an entertaining instructor and she involved the class and gave us plenty of breaks. We even finished about 30 minutes early which worked in my favor. I was there with my little sister who coaches another team and she left the clinic sick, so I helped coach her team who had their first tournament on Saturday.

This gave me approximately 60 minutes to get from Rockford to Maple Grove with a stop for a whistle and new tennis shoes.

I was able to hop in to Target and get my whistle and then scoot over to Kohls for some new tennis shoes since you can't wear outside shoes on the courts. I walked through the shoe aisles looking for anything that was a 10 and not ugly. I found some pretty ones from Reebok. Before I knew it I was off to Ralia to coach a team I didn't know and to coach my first tournament ever!

The girls were up against some tough teams, but they did win one match!

Sunday I had my teams tournament. It's so interesting the difference between a 14's team and my 16's team. 14's are loud, encouraging, cheering for their team on the sidelines. 16's are dead silent, they are in their own heads too much.

We didn't win a single game, but we did slowly progress throughout the day. You could see the fear and nervousness on every girls face. They definitely didn't give it all they had, so hopefully that was just first tournament jitters and we can knock those out for our upcoming tournaments.

Luckily, after my volleyball filled weekend, I had MLK Jr. day off from work so I could get some things checked off my list. I did about 3,000 loads of laundry in between grocery trips with my mom to Costco and Whole Foods.

When I finally got home I prepped my food for the week, put all the chicken I purchased into individual baggies to freeze, cause ya know, dinner party of one over here (well, most nights any way) and finally got to use the mini food processor I got for Christmas!

I am 18 days away from jet setting off to sunny, warm Cabo which means being on point with my meals. Since plain chicken is so, well, plain, I added some homemade pesto sauce and it was so good! I don't think I'll ever buy pre packaged pesto ever again.

And that brings us up to date. Basically, you can expect a lot of the same in the coming weeks. February through April are huge tournament months for volleyball and we have several that will be 2 days and some 3 day events coming up. I'm really going to cherish those one day tournaments.

Weekend Review 40

This past weekend was anything but relaxing and I am a-okay with that. That is until my alarm went off this morning telling me the weekend is over and I have to go to work. I shouldn't complain though, this is the first full week I've worked all year and I have a three day weekend coming up, followed by three (hopefully) quick weeks of work before I head off to Cabo!

Right after work on Friday I booked it home to change so I could make it to a barre class I had signed up for through ClassPass at Six Degrees in UpTown. It's just 2 blocks from my apartment and I made it just in time for a quick run through of the class before it started.

Of all the classes I've been to in my life, this one left me so much more sore than any other class. Except that very first spin class where you are sore in places you didn't know existed. It's been three days and my arms are still shaky and it hurts to laugh after all those different planks, push-ups and crunches. It was unlike any other barre class I've taken, but I really liked it and will hopefully be adding that to my Fridays going forward. Assuming I'm able to lift weights again by then.

After class it was officially date night and we headed to the warehouse district for some Black Sheep Pizza and a show at Acme Comedy. There were to comedians in town that were on Last Comic Standing. We both agreed that Randy Liedtke stole the show and was a great comedian.

Saturday morning I had plans to have brunch with a couple of my cousins. We went to the UpTown Tavern and the $3 mimosas were fun, but the food was less than stellar. We kept the afternoon going by bringing Pam to Trader Joe's for the very first time. I think it's appropriate to say that she absolutely loved the place and it's probably going to be her regular shopping destination from now on.

Later that night the cousins reconnected at another cousins house but this time there was babies involved which makes most gatherings all the more fun. We had some drinks and food, listened to music, chatted and spent a lot of time saying 'he's sooo cute!' Pam and I had a sleepover at her house and I was a stand up guest by falling asleep on her couch.

Sunday was pretty standard with volleyball practice. We did a ton of serve receiving so to keep the serves constantly going over the net, Shelby and I served to the girls. I forget what a workout volleyball is, especially serving approx ~100 balls. We have our first tournament on Sunday and I'm a tad nervous. Not really for the girls, but for myself.

After practice I asked my parents if I could come over and hang out with Miley. Of course they said yes because she needed a bath and I'm the only one who bathes her. We ordered my favorite pizza and got totally sucked in to the Golden Globes. I'm not usually an awards show fan, but when celebs get drunk and get to have a mic, I'll stay and watch.

And that's all she wrote.

It's Giveaway Time!

Hi friends! If you follow me on social media then you'll notice I've been enjoying ClassPass the last couple of weeks. If you don't know what ClassPass is, let me tell you.

ClassPass is a monthly membership to boutique fitness classes that just launched in Minneapolis! There are tons of classes available to members including cycling, pilates, yoga, strength training, dance, martial arts and more!

Rates vary between $79-$99 a month depending on what city you are in and you get unlimited classes to studios in your network. However, you can only visit the same studio up to 3 times per monthly membership cycle.

I belong to a local big box gym and with the new year, lines are long for machines and classes are packed. With ClassPass, you register for a class ahead of time to ensure you have a spot. If you do cancel within certain time limits, there may be charges. It's that extra push to get you to commit to going to the class you signed up for.

So far I have tried an amazing barre class at Haute Barre and a spin class at the Shed. My arms are still sore from spin. Yes, my arms. They had us doing push ups while sprinting! I've never experienced that before.

I have a couple of weeks left on my membership and I plan to take full advantage now that my schedule will be back to normal since I'm officially done with jury duty.

If you would like to get to the front of the line and sign up for a ClassPass membership, use my referral link so you can skip the wait list!

In other news, the upper midwest has been hit with some pretty brutal temperatures lately, so what does that mean? It means that Minnesotans are dreaming of crystal clear lakes, sunny skies and boating.
This year the Minneapolis Boat Show will also be hosting Anchors & Ales, an event for beer enthusiasts and boaters alike! If there's one thing that goes along with chilling on a pontoon under the warm summer sun, it's enjoying a nice cold beer.

This year breweries include: 612Brew, Bent Paddle, Boom Island Brewing Company, Excelsior Brewing, Indeed Brewing Company, Lift Bridge Brewing Co, Lucid Brewing and Schell's Brewery.

Seven Sushi & Steakhouse will have bites of food you can enjoy while listening to tunes from Jambo Joe Bones.

Today I'm giving away 4 pairs of tickets to Anchors & Ales which takes place Friday, January 23rd from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the Minneapolis Convention Center at the Minneapolis Boat Show.

My 2014 In Review

Excuse me for my absence. My office closed for a week and a half and I used that time to watch 5 seasons of Parenthood. I'm a week late, but in this world, that's rather typical of me so lets take a look back at what 2014 had in store for me.

I went to Cabo on a girls vacation. We made friends with pirates, saw lots of whales, went snorkeling and made new friends every night in the hot tub. It just the trip we all needed as the Polar Vortex hit Minnesota.

I felt the need to cook a whole lot this month. I assume it was because of the Polar Vortex and being stuck inside and needing to add an extra layer of blubber so I wouldn't freeze to death. Creamy Garlic Pasta, Homemade Beef Stew, Real Potato 'Chips', Baked Ziti.

I gave up blogging 'regularly' and started my Weekly Review posts.

I started a new job! I also made Easter brunch for my family and friends all by myself. I probably over did it on the amount of food, but I loved setting up the table, cooking the food and most importantly, eating the food.

I had my very first Giveaway on this here blog and enjoyed a nice, warm Memorial weekend at the cabin.

I attended a POPSugar event at the Minneapolis Farmers Market.

I moved in to my little apartment, enjoyed a long weekend at the cabin for the 4th. We also had our second annual cousins weekend which turned out to be even more crazy than the year before.

I turned 30 which was way less life changing than I had expected.

I became debt free and my cousin Erin got married!

I went to my first ever Gopher football game.

I decided to coach a club volleyball team and I got to go to the Garth Brooks concert!

Well...December has proven to be a lot busy but with not much excitement. We had Christmas, which was lovely as always, volleyball went in to full swing and my free time has been occupied by spending it with a person of the opposite sex.

2015...because I can see in to the future...Is going to be a busy first few months. Volleyball tournaments begin, vacation is just 33 days away, and...well, I guess that's really all there is, BUT those tournaments take up a lot of time, two will be out of town, a couple are three days long and then there will be make up practices. 2015, I say to you Bring. It. On.
