Good Bye 2013, Hello 2014

I have absolutely no idea where the last 365 days went. Here's where at least 12 of them disappeared off to.

January
I got a juicer for Christmas and thought it would be a fun idea to juice for a month. You can check out how far I made it on that here.
February
I ditched the juice cleanse and finally realized it was 2013. The year fro-yo was invented and shops popped up all over the universe. B.T.Dubbs, who eats fro-yo in February in Minnesota? A true Minnesotan, that's who.

March
Mom, Pop and I took a vaca to Nuevo Vallarta and had a grand ol time. I would love to go back again some day.

April
I completed my first and last (so far) half marathon. I finished in 2:29:00. It wasn't my best effort, but I did it and I completed all 13.1 miles.

May
The whole family went to Lutsen for Pat and Summers wedding. Everyone took an extra day off and we made a mini vaca out of it.

June
Kayla, Kari and I continued on with our sister dinners and went to Fat Lorenzo's for pizza. I highly suggest going there in the summer for pizza, gelato and a walk around the lake.

July
The McNeally cousins all gathered up at Big Sand Lake for a cousin weekend. #Yolo turned into the theme of the weekend and everyone had a great time...until I couldn't go 30 minutes without getting sick, and my cousin had an emergency at home with her son. Next year will go a tad more smooth, I hope.

August
I volunteered with Twin Cities in Motion for the first time at the Twins 5K. I got to work on the field which was such a neat experience. I had to guard the home dugout and got to say 'hey' to a few players that came in! I think I'd definitely volunteer for this run again in the future. To any fellow runners, I suggest volunteering at a race. It's a great way to give back and say thanks to all the volunteers that pull these races together.

September
I road tripped it up to Fargo for Laura and Ben's wedding! The bride was absolutely stunning.

October
October brought on another road trip and wedding in Milwaukee for Bridget and Andrew. One of the best weddings I have ever attended.

November
Kari had a bunch of her friends up at the cabin for a Fall weekend getaway. We played a lot of giant Jenga, watched plenty of football and drank copious amounts of Zap!

December
The month flew by in the blink of an eye. So many holiday celebrations and family gatherings. A time to reflect on the past year and be thankful for everything that I have, good or bad.

40 Day Challenge: Christmas

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and if you don't celebrate, then I hope you at least enjoyed a day off from work!

I've been getting in some good workouts, but with the holidays I'm getting all sorts of discombobulated and am just trying to not burst from eating and drinking too much. I'm trying to up my running and I want to get 3+ miles in at a time. I'm combining my runs with a workout from the Summer Shred that I signed up for and never actually completed. At the time I had also just signed up to start working with Kirk, and he kicked my butt enough that I put the Shred workouts in a drawer and never looked back, until now.

There are some good workouts though. I did this one that really got the sweat rolling down my face:

30 sec. on 10 sec off 3-5 times
*jumping jacks
*push-ups
*skaters
*high knees
*bicycle crunches
*plank
*mountain climbers
*jump squats

On Monday I went to the gym per usual and we moved like crazy and filled the entire hour. We did a 21-14-7 workout all with a bosu ball or kettle bells, followed by some suicide runs and in between runs we got to do 50 push-ups.

Both of those workouts scorched around 500 calories. Then I went and drank 1,000 calories of wine. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I don't have to drink for a very long time.

I'm not going to reach my 40 days, but at least I'm still sticking with my workouts and really killing them. I haven't let too much time pass. Tops, a day or two before I re-motivate myself. As of today we are 23 days from the trip so it's crunch time.

Christmas highlights:
*I got to meet baby Dylan Jane!
*My cousin Jaime announced she is pregnant with their first baby!
*While holding Dylan she had a massive blow out that managed to get on my shirt which led to an outfit change (for both of us).
*House tours of my cousin Andy's new house and Erin's new house.
*The food. Christmas Eve wontons and Christmas Day beef tenderloin!
*Only managed to burn myself twice. Once from my curling iron, once from grabbing a hot log from the fire.
*Singing Christmas songs around the table at the request of a 4 year old.
*Spending time with my family, cousins, aunts, uncles, and all their kids!

40 Day Challenge: Day 19

Day 19: For once my bus was on time and I got to the gym with plenty of time to spare so I hopped on the treadmill for a 1.5 mile warm-up before my session started. I'm not going to totally break it down for you because, honestly, I don't even know how to Google half the workouts we did. Here's a sampling though:

*Squats w/ 1 45 lb weight
*Step ups w/ 15 lbs
*Lateral arm raises w/ 8 lbs
*Leg raises w/ 5 lb between feet
*Flutter kicks
*V-sit w/ bench press w/ 15 lbs

There were a few more that I'm pretty sure Kirk made up. What I do know is that my arms, back and butt are absolutely killing me today.


Eats:
B- Usual Muscle Milk protein powder and Almond milk. Added some flax seed because I have it and want to use it up.
L- Smart One for Weight Watchers Loaded Potato Soup and a can of corn
S- Banana
D-4 slices lg. Pizza Hut pan pizza and a coke

Dinner effed me good. My parents had a late meeting so I was left to fend for myself and I have a horrible obsession with pepperoni pizza and I was in so much pain I didn't want to stand and make anything. Pizza it was. All 1,408 calories in those 4 pieces of pizza.


That's embarrassing.

40 Day Challenge: Day 18

Day 18: Twas a good day. I resisted a lot of temptation and managed to get my work out in. I thought twice about what I said yesterday though, and I'm scratching the Jillian Michaels thing. I get bored knowing I'm doing the same work out every morning for a week at a time, so I've opted to go back to doing the Summer Shred I signed up for in September. She is actually offering a New Year's Shred, so go check it out!

For day 18 I did a modification of day one of the shred. I only did it one time through, and it's loaded with jump roping, squats, sit-ups, planks, crunches, lateral and side raises, etc. It took me about 20 minutes to complete the one round. After that I moved on to the treadmill for a three mile speed walk/sprint.


Eats:
B - Usual Muscle Milk protein powder and almond milk
L - evol Truffle Mac & Cheese and green beans. Please go check your local grocery store for evol frozen meals. They are all natural and oh so tasty and filling.
S - Banana
D - 3 pieces of alfredo pizza

All in all it was a good day. Stayed on track for food and exercise. Let's hope I can keep this up!

40 Day Challenge: Day 17

Day 17: I had my small group training session and I was definitely sweating.

1 min x 4 (30 sec. rest in between)

*shuttle with 2 15 lb kettle bells
*stationary lunges with 15 lb weights
*push up with side crunch
*Bosu ball sit ups
*squat with resistance band

1 min x 4 (30 sec rest in between)

*box jumps
*tricep pulls
*tire flip
*squat press with 15 lbs
*TRX bands - arms out straight, palms in



I liked the variation in this work out. I have about 6 sessions left until my trip, so I'm going to up my game a little. Today is the three month mark from Cabo. I know I can't get the beach body I want in that time, but I can sure as hell try my hardest.

Eats:
No breakfast - FAIL
Homemade veggie soup - spinach, carrots, green beans, peas, potatoes, navy beans, onions
Snack - cinnamon roll
Dinner - 1/2 steak burrito, chips and salsa, vino verde

I have two Jillian Michaels DVD's that I'm going to rotate through. My goal is to do one every morning before work. Since they are 30 minutes, I should be able to make that work. It'll force me out of bed and actually get my butt moving. I've been hitting that snooze button way to long these last few days.

40 Day Challenge: Days 13-16

Woops! Fell of the face of the earth there for a moment, but don't worry, I found my way back and here I sit to share with you all that I did not do.

Day 13: Does 1 solid hr of Bocce Ball count as exercise? I'm going to say yes because you are bending, walking, carrying heavy balls, etc. I had my company holiday party at Pinstripes where we had a lovely carb heavy lunch to carb load for our indoor bocce games. Work holiday party merged with a friends birthday party and before I knew it, there were no more hours in the day to get in a real work out. So bocce it is.

Day 14: I was summoned from my bed nice and early to help the mother set up for our annual wonton making day. I easily could have laid in bed for another 45 minutes since all the guests were 45+ minutes late. It was a jolly good time of noshing on homemade meatballs, chicken wings, veggies and cheese while filling and folding chicken wontons. They were so delicious and I can't wait until Christmas Eve when I get to eat them again. In the meantime we have some that are cream cheese filled. Equally delicious.

Day 15: Again, I'm going to say I got in something that resembled fitness. I finished up my Christmas shopping with the mother lady again, but this time we walked half of Fleet Farm, went up and down every aisle of Big Lots, 2/3 of DSW, Marshalls, and Home Goods. Those are not small stores my friends.

Day 16: Fail. I spent a majority of my day in bed. I didn't sleep much at all the night before because of some horrible back/neck/head/arm pain. I have no clue what happened. Maybe it was folding all those wontons and the motion of moving a wine glass to and fro my wine drinking hole? Either way it's been quite painful and I spent half of my day in bed with an ice pack moving from my elbow to my back.

I rescheduled my day 16 training session to day 17. That will be followed by our last Cabo Girls/Taco Tuesday dinner before our trip that is 1 month 1 day away!

Damn. Now I'm craving cream cheese wontons.

Sorry this is boring and pictureless, but I need to keep an update for myself.

40 Day Challenge: Day 12

Day 12 I met with Kirk for my small group training session. It was a butt kicker per usual.

The first circuit was with the bosu ball. I love those things.

1 min x 3
Bosu ball burpees with a hop on top
Side plank on ball while punching with the other arm. 30 sec each side
Elbow to knee sit ups on bosu ball. 1 min each side
Squat pulses. Regular, toes out, regular
Push ups with triangle hands on bosu ball
Plank pop ups on bosu ball

5 Min treadmill at 15 incline as fast as you can go

1 min x 3
Bicep press with resting above the head
Jump pull ups
Mountain climbers
Triceps pulls


Happy Friday everyone! Just over a week until Christmas. Today I get to drop off the mound of gifts my company purchased for a family that we adopted this year. It's been a crappy morning, my car window won't go up, so it's nice to be going some good for a family in need. At least I have a car and a family that will bring me a car to use for the day. It's the small things.

40 Day Challenge: Days 10 & 11

Here I am 1/4 of my way into my 40 Day's of Fitness Challenge and I'm still going strong...I think anyway.

Day 10 there was no workout. I ran some errands with the ma and pa and then we stopped at my old stomping grounds, Champps, for some burgers. I was ravenous with that juicy slab of meat, and those warm crispy waffle fries smothered in seasoned sour cream. Ooh, seasoned sour cream!

The rest of the days eats were as follows:
-Protein shake. Duh.
-The most boring lunch imaginable. Lettuce, carrots, dressing and a side of string cheese.
-Nature Valley Peanut bar.

Day 11 was out to sabotage me from the very beginning. Every year our office building hosts a tenant breakfast where they bring in food on food on food. Bacon, sausage, pulled ham, cheesy hashbrowns, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, A WAFFLE BAR!!  It would have been rude of me to not have a little of everything. Like I don't appreciate them letting me work in their building or something. THEN, after breakfast, one of the building engineers dropped off a platter of cookies, brownies and Christmas tree shaped Rice Krispie bars! First world problems. People forcing you to eat warm food and treats.

And this is what is sitting in the pit of my stomach forming a nice pot belly.
-Bacon, ham, 1/4 waffle, cheesy hashbrowns
-Christmas tree shaped Rice Krispie (Did I mention it was on a stick? That's very Minnesotan.)
-Salad. Lettuce, carrots, egg, dressing
-1/2 Cookie
-1/2 Chicken breast, heaping pile of green beans, sad small amount of my precious au gratin potatoes
- 2.5 glasses of wine (had to do a wine comparison so we don't serve bad wine at Christmas)

Before dinner I did manage to head downstairs and get some treadmill action in. 5 miles. It felt great. If I didn't want to get dinner going, I probably would have kept moving.


Weather Update:
Why the eff do I live here? It's 20 degrees warmer today. Yup. It's in the teens. Brrr.

40 Day Challenge: Day 9

Day 9 I had an hr session with Kirk and here's how it all went down:

Ladder push ups starting at 15 working down to 1 and finished with toe push ups to failure.

After 5 minutes of push up hell we moved into our circuit workout:

1 Minute each move, 3 times
V-sit twist with 10 lb weight
Toe touches (laying down, hands to your side, sit up and touch your toes)
Leg raises
Flutter kicks (make sure to move the whole leg, not just from the knees)
Leg raise, toe touch with 10 lb weight (keep legs raised and reach for toes)

30 sec. each move, 3 times
Laying on a bench, sit up, jump, lay down, keeping your feet on the ground the whole time except when you jump
Sitting on a bench, stand up on one foot keeping the opposite foot off the ground, repeat. Switch legs after 30 sec.
Bench push ups
Triceps dips

1 Min, 1 time
Squats
Plie squats with heel touch
Single leg lateral box jump (short box)
Single leg lateral box jump (tall box)

No Garmin pic, but I murdered about 380 calories in this 55 min workout.

What I ate:
-Protein shake. Usual Muscle Milk powder and Almond Milk
-Lunch was left over green beans and broccoli chicken alfredo
-Small bowl of chili, no cheese, sour cream or crackers. Blah.

I know it's only been 9 days since I've started my little challenge, but let me tell you I am beyond frustrated. It seems that every time I get on the workout wagon the scale just goes up and up and up. I'm trying not to focus on what that says because it is getting really discouraging and I know that if I just keep watching what I put in my pie whole and keep moving for an hour every day, that I will see the results I want and need to see.

40 Day Challenge: Day 8

Day 8 was simple. I woke up at 9:00 which is very odd for me. I'm usually up before the sun and have a hard time falling back to bed. Since it was already late in the morning I headed downstairs, turned on the tube and jumped on the treadmill. I've been really sore lately and I think it's from the sub-zero temps getting in all these workouts.

Father of the Bride was on, so I walked for about an hr and it looked something like this.

Min 1-10 3.7/2.0 incline
Min 10-20 3.7/ 3.0 incline
Min 20-30 3.7/4.0 incline
Min 30-40 3.7/5.0 incline
Min 40-50 3.7/6.0 incline
Min 50-55 cool down


I spent the rest of the day Christmas shopping with my mom and little sister. I tell you what. I do not enjoy shopping and trying on clothes all day long. BUT, I did find some great items that will soon be wrapped and patiently waiting for me under the Christmas tree. I love the Albertville Outlets, especially this time of year when everything is 50-60% off. It makes me and my checking account much happier.

There's not much of a weekend to recap since I really didn't do much of anything except make sure to get my work outs in each day! I'm honestly quite pleased with myself in making these workouts a priority and not giving up. I notice I just feel better physically and mentally when I do some sort of physical activity. I also get much better nights rest...maybe that's why I managed to sleep in until 9:00 on Sunday morning?

I have a session with Kirk tonight and I'm sure it'll be another ass kicking, per usual. It'll be nice to go in to the gym tonight and let him know I've actually worked out every day since our last session!

40 Day Challenge: Days 6 & 7

It's the weekend which would typically mean eating out and drinking too many beers. Instead, I chose to stay in, hang out with the dogs and decorate the Christmas tree while watching endless TV movies.

Day 6 I stopped by my beloved Trader Joe's for some Prosecco and snacks for dinner.

As soon as I got home, I popped in my Mari Winsor Pilates DVD and did the accelerated body sculpt.
I used to do this DVD all the time and never looked more trim. I remember thinking it was such an easy workout, but last night proved me wrong. After not doing pilates and stretching for quite some time I definitely noticed my flexibility has decreased. At the same time, the ab exercises I used to avoid, (V-sits) I could do with ease since I've really been working my core in my sessions with Kirk.
Day 7 I had a hard time waking up because someone needed me to stay in bed and cuddle with her all morning. I didn't have the heart to wake her up and make her move from a nice warm bed.
When she finally let me get out of bed we headed downstairs and hopped on the treadmill. Sex and the City 2 was on so I did a walk/run workout that looked something like this.

Movie-walk at 3.6/1.5 incline
Commercial-run at 6.0/0.5 incline
Movie-walk at 3.6/2.5 incline
Commercial-run at 6.0/1.0 incline
Movie-walk at 3.6/3.0 incline
Commercial-run at 6.0/1.5 incline
Movie-walk at 3.6/3.5 incline

On average the movie played for 10 minutes and commercials were 5 minutes and I worked out for 1:05.
It felt really good to wake up and get after it on a weekend morning.

Week one I made it 5/7 days for working out.

40 Day Challenge: Day 5

Day 5 was a little special. I went to see Kirk at 4:30 which was awesome because the first 30 minutes I got him mano y mano. That would probably double the cost of what I'm paying now if I always had him one on one. I think I'm going to start going Thursdays at 4:30 though which is a huge win for me!

I was still pretty sore from Monday's work out so I definitely struggled through, but I made it!

Here's how the hour session went down.

Circuit 1 ('boxing')
20 times - left, right, squat
20 - single leg lateral jump (over a bench)
20 times - left, left, BIG right, squat
20 - single leg lateral jump (over a bench)
20 times, left, right, squat
20 - single leg lateral jump (over a bench)

20 push ups (against a bench)
20 triceps dips
15 push ups (against a bench)
20 triceps dips
10 push ups (against a bench)
10 triceps dips

Circuit 2 x 3 (1 min each)
V Sit with single arm press (30 sec each arm. 15 lbs)
Bicycle hold (10 sec each leg, 10 sec fast for 1 min).
V sit cross over with 8 lbs

20 Straddle jumps (sets the time for the following two exercises)
Push ups
Jump Lunges

For whatever reason my Garmin goofed and combined Tuesdays and Thursdays workouts, so, even though I wish I worked out for 1:27 and burned 731 calories, I only worked out for 55 minutes and burned 452 calories.



What I ate:
-Usual protein shake with Muscle Milk protein powder and Almond Milk
-Mrs. Fields sugar cookie (this cookie makes me close my eyes and smile it's so good)
-6 inch wheat meatball marinara with American cheese (only ate the bottom part of the bread)
-String cheese
-Slice of meatloaf, small scoop of mashed potatoes, green beans, salad

Do you wear a heart rate monitor? Kirk mentioned my heart rate seemed high at 202 after our first circuit. It didn't really phase me because any time I'm on a machine with a hear rate monitor it always tells me to slow down because my heart rate is too high. He took my pulse and said it seemed accurate. He mentioned if he got his HR to 200 he'd probably be on the ground. I'm curious what makes my heart rate so high when I work out?

Day 4 and a Christmas Link Up

For 20-some years my Catholic family has always had a Jewish dinner a Chinese dinner. A couple of weeks before Christmas my mom, sisters, aunt and cousins gather at my parents house for what we've dubbed 'Wonton Making Day'. We chop, fold and deep fry a couple hundred wontons for our Christmas Eve meal.


My family has always celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve. Kari will usually come over early afternoon to help me set the table. Kayla and Joe come around 3:00 and we wait for the 'Other Farnham's' to arrive.

As soon as the guests arrive the house is full of laughter and conversation. Everyone gathers in the kitchen and family room with a glass of wine or beer and some snacks. Typically my deviled eggs and some fancy cheese and crackers. We mingle and catch up with each other until dinner is ready!

We make our way to the dining room, grab our plates and start plating up mounds of Chinese chicken salad, white rice, rolls, chicken and beef skewers, wontons and orange pineapple dipping sauce. TO.DIE.FOR.


Dinner always goes by way to quick with this group. After we're all stuffed to the brim we head to the living room and sit around the tree while we play a gift exchange game. After the game, we head back to the dining room for individual chocolate silk pies with raspberries and whipped cream and of course some Baileys and coffee or Amaretto.

Once our buttons are flying off our skirts the 'Other Farnham's' head off to church while we sit behind and fill up our wine glasses, pick up the dishes and fill up our glasses again.

We've always opened our family gifts to each other on Christmas Eve, so we head back in to the living room, sit around the tree and pass out gifts one by one.

No one in my immediate family has any kids, but on Christmas Eve there are three dogs in the house which makes Christmas morning all the more exciting. Once one dog wakes up he or she has to go wake up the other dogs. Much like us girls when we were younger.

Santa still visits every Christmas morning, but even to this day, at 26, 29 and 30 years old, we are not allowed to go check out our stockings/gifts until mom and dad have gone downstairs to make coffee. We dump out our stockings which are rather similar to when we were younger. Tights, chapstick, hair binders and headbands. One year Santa spoiled us with Michael Kors purses, that little rascal.


He's more practical in our gifts by giving us welcome mats, bath towels and one year a floating beer pong table. Once the unwrapping has ended we pop in some home VHS's from the mid 80's and talk about how cute we used to be while we eat Monkey Bread and enjoy mimosas.

And that is out 20-some year Christmas Eve/Morning tradition. I can't wait to celebrate this year. We will have a baby joining us!!

If you're wondering what my workout was on day 4, it was running errands and trying to survive the snow we got. Chalk that up as a big fail. Eating was a pretty big fail too.

What I ate:
-Muscle Milk protein shake
-Pepperoni pizza and small salad
-Boneless diablo wings and small salad

40 Day Challenge: Day 3

December 3 = day 3 of my 40 Day's of Fitness Challenge. If you feel so inclined, jump on the bandwagon and share what you're eating and what type of workouts you are doing to curb the inevitable Holiday weight gain.

My mom cleaned and rearranged their basement to make it more 'workout friendly' with a treadmill, stationary bike, weights, etc. It'll make heading down there and getting in a work out a little more enticing. She also suggested that we go through the month of December without alcohol except for on Christmas. I quickly shunned her and sent her to a corner with a dunce hat on. I kid.

We are going to go alcohol free in the house Mondays through Thursdays. It's really not a big deal for me to not drink during the week. Sometimes I feel there's hardly any time in the day to uncork a bottle of vino and actually sit down and enjoy it before it's time to rest my head for the night.

Here's day three's work out:
I did this work out from the Tone It Up Girls with a slight modification. I was running short on time. During the Kick Start portion, I walked 2 min, sprinted 1 min, walked 2 min. Go Long, I switched up the lunges and did squats and sit-ups in my 2nd and 3rd circuits. Ramp It Up, I did 30 sec. sprint, 30 sec off (my treadmill would take 30 sec to change the speed), and I did that 4 times.



What I ate:
-Usual protein shake with Muscle Milk protein powder and Almond Breeze unsweetened almond milk.
-Subway 6" spicy Italian on wheat with pickles, black olives, lettuce, American cheese, light mayo. I may have accidentally picked up a bag of Doritos, but they are still sitting on my desk. I felt mucho guilty.
-Taco Tuesday at Nico's with the Cabo girls! This means too many chips, half of a delicious burrito (no dairy) and a glass or two of vino.

40 Day Challenge: Day 2

Hello and welcome to the snow globe I'm currently living in. It is December so I am not allowed to complain about the snow, but I don't want it...not yet at least.

December 1 I had every intention of starting my 40 day challenge with a run/walk for an hr on the treadmill. It did not happen. Instead I was summoned to St. Paul where I was forced to have a good time whilst drinking hard cider and chatting with friends.

December 2 is here and I've been thinking about how I can get out of my training session allll day. Isn't it weird how long it takes to make a habit and actually enjoy it, but how quickly you can fall off the wagon? I hate getting back on, but I guess if we never got back on that horse, we'd all be very fat, unsuccessful people who walked around with our heads hung low. For shame.

Side note: When I was younger I took riding lessons and I was bucked off the horse when I was learning to ride bare back. Guess what? I got back on! Eventually riding and mounting the horse bare back was one of my favorite things. This could sound horribly horrible if taken out of context.

I went to my training session and per usual it was a complete ass kicker. Here's the low down:

Circuit 1 x 4
1 Min side shuffle
1 Min long jump (long jumps with feet together)
1 Min Squats with band
1 Min V sit-ups
1 Min Spider Man Lunge Push up (stand up after the lunge and repeat on the other side)

Circuit 2 x 2
30 Sec toe push ups, 30 sec knee push ups, 10 sec hold 90 degrees push up position
30 Sec body weight squats, 30 sec jump squats, 10 sec hold 90 degree squat position
30 Sec lunges, 30 second jump lunges, 10 sec hold lunge
30 Sec bicep curl, 30 sec bicep curl from 90 degrees, 10 sec hold at 90 degrees (10 lb weight)
30 Sec laying down triceps extension, 30 sec sitting triceps extension

I'm so sore today from those damn V sit-ups.

Generally, eating was pretty good. Started the day with my usual protein shake of chocolate Muscle Milk protein powder with original un-sweetened Almond Milk. Lunch was a D'Brians salad with apples, chicken, romaine hearts and walnuts, followed by dinner at the ungodly hr of 9:00 PM. It was broccoli, chicken and cream of chicken with some cheese baked in the oven.
